Laparoscopy

What Is Meant By Laparoscopic Surgery?

No one wants to hear the term 'surgery.' It can evoke thoughts of long recovery times, large, visible scars, and significant discomfort. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Our OBGYN team in Bowie, Greenbelt, and North Bethesda, MD wants to make reproductive surgery as easy and painless as possible. That’s why we employ minimally invasive surgical techniques.

While minimally invasive surgery can be used for many different medical surgeries outside of the OBGYN world, this technique allows us to treat a variety of common reproductive conditions while also promising a reduction in pain, fewer complications, and a shorter recovery time than traditional surgery. Our goal is always to provide you with the safest and most effective surgical options when it comes to your reproductive health.

Minimally invasive surgery can be used for these common procedures:

  • Hysterectomy : the removal of the ovaries, uterus or fallopian tubes (can be performed vaginally)
  • Laparoscopy : a small camera is placed in the abdomen to remove ovaries or ovarian growths, as well as to perform hysterectomies or to treat endometriosis
  • Hysteroscopy : a small camera is guided into the uterus to remove fibroids and polyps
  • Endometrial ablation : the removal of endometrial lining to treat heavy menstrual bleeding

Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery can be used to detect and treat a variety of health issues. This has become a fairly common outpatient procedure performed over the last 20 years. With minimally invasive surgery only a small incision is made, so there is less scarring than with traditional surgical techniques. Then a thin tube is placed into the abdomen through the incision. This lighted tube contains a camera and allows us to look at the reproductive organs and detect any issues.

In laparoscopic surgery, there are a variety of benefits that open surgery cannot offer. There is less pain and discomfort post-procedure since only a small incision is made, which also means faster recovery time. Furthermore, our sterilized equipment ensures that there is less risk of infection and less blood loss with minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery can also be performed in our office on an outpatient basis, so you won’t have to worry about staying overnight in a hospital.

This procedure is one of the most efficient ways to pinpoint and treat a variety of reproductive conditions. If you are experiencing any reproductive issues, it’s important that you come in for a proper diagnosis. Our goal is to make diagnosis and management of your reproductive problems easier on you, so you can live a healthy life.
